Explaining Chimney Inspection Levels to Homeowners

October 29, 2026

The problem

NFPA 211 describes three levels of chimney inspection, and the Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends annual inspection of chimneys and venting systems. Homeowners often don't know the difference between a sweep and an inspection, or why a Level 2 inspection may be recommended when buying a home or changing appliances.

The challenges

  • Confusing terms. Sweep, inspection and levels are unclear to customers.
  • Seasonal rush. Fall demand spikes.
  • Camera inspections. Level 2 inspections cost more.
  • Findings. Customers may doubt repair recommendations.
  • Records. Previous inspection results aren't kept.

Opportunity cost of the status quo

Confused customers postpone inspections or doubt recommendations. Seasonal rush means lost bookings.

Illustrative arithmetic, not data: if a company books 200 sweeps in the fall and could spread half to spring with reminders, crews would be less overloaded.

Industry solutions

Plain explanations. Explain each inspection level and when it's used.

Photos and video. Show findings.

Off-season scheduling. Encourage spring and summer bookings.

Written reports. Provide inspection reports.

Record history. Track each chimney's inspections.
